Let Freedom Ring!

As fireworks light up the sky and flags wave proudly across the country, Americans gather to celebrate our long-held promise of liberty and justice for all.

But this Independence Day, a critical question echoes louder than any national anthem: What does freedom mean if it is not for everyone?

While we honor the spirit of July 4th—the historic break from tyranny and the birth of a nation founded on the principles of democracy—we must also confront the reality that many rights of the individual guaranteed by our Constitution – and even the Constitution itself once considered secure are now under threat.

In recent years, we’ve seen voting rights undermined, reproductive freedoms and individual protections rolled back and under attack, books banned and speech censored, along with rising economic inequality and systemic injustice, leaving all Americans without the promised opportunity to live freely and safely.

These are not distant, abstract issues—they are present and personal. Freedom is not fireworks and parades. It’s the right to make decisions about one’s own body, to love openly, to vote without obstruction, to speak and learn freely, and to live with dignity.

So today, let us not only celebrate our ideals of a democratic nation but also recommit ourselves to defending those ideals. Let freedom ring—and not just in words, but in actions.
